Job Purpose and Impact

The Merchant III will contribute to handling a supplier base and fulfill transactions delivering commodities that meet production requirements and specifications in terms of timing, volume, quantity and cost. In this role you will be a member of the West Region Commercial team that is primarily responsible for grain sales, game plan development, recommending trading and marketing strategies and overseeing logistics execution for our country grain elevators in the region. You will focus mainly on truck grain trading in the Kansas Geography, working and managing relationships with various established customers and prospecting new business. You will be part of the overall merchandising team which develops game plans on grains and the total margin generation and P&L for the overall product line. In this role you will be expected to learn and grow into a leader among peers on the team. We seek a professional who will help buy and sell commodities from/to country elevators, producers, feed mills and processors.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with transportation and logistics, quality assurance, customer managers and credit manager to ensure efficient execution.

  • Originate, procure, and sell grains to regional customers to reach target volumes and gain revenue.

  • Generate market, position and profit and loss reports based on data and specialty reports.

  • Research and analyze various freight opportunities in the marketplace to maximize margin.

  • Work directly with customers, suppliers, and business counterparts in developing business solutions to meet their needs.

  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of four years of related work experience

  • Ability to travel as needed to visit elevators and customers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of merchandising experience

  • Proven ability to understand grain margins, futures and basis relationships

  • Basic knowledge of agriculture and/or livestock feeding

  • Basic knowledge of logistics and freight planning

  • Understanding of CFTC regulations and NGFA trade rules
