Department:Solid WasteReports to:Roll Off Supervisor

Summary:Performs mechanical maintenance and troubleshoots all Division commercial compactors. Generates daily, weekly and monthly service schedule for all commercial compactors and open tops. Assists Roll off Supervisor and administration in compactor inventory control.

Scope of Responsibility:Responsible for the operation and inventory control of all of the Division's commercial compactors and open tops. Accountable for customer satisfaction with respect to compactor operations, maintenance, cleanliness and safety.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for performing all compactor maintenance, emergency troubleshooting, "on-call" requests and preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Complies daily, weekly and monthly compactor service schedule. Service schedule is related Roll Off Supervisor and Division Administration.
  • Assist Roll-Off Supervisor with compactor and open top inventory control.
  • Maintains accurate inventory control of compactor accessory equipment and operating conditions thereof. Relays required equipment replacement list to Roll-Off Supervisor immediately.
  • Performs all minor and preventative maintenance and adjustments in the yard or in the field.
  • Responds immediately to commercial compactor complaints and/or requests from commercial clients. Understands and accepts the responsibility of being on 24-hour call status.
  • Required to drive when necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned to include welding, sandblasting, painting, relocating box containers, operating shop equipment and driving any and all shop vehicles as deemed necessary.
  • Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position.
  • Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:High school diploma or GED required. Six (6) months mechanical/troubleshooting progressively responsible experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and supervise section employees when required.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe conduct of heavy manual work
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of solid waste compactor disposal and refuse.
  • Ability to perform the routine maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain and control confidential information.

License and certification requirements:Possess a valid Texas B-CDL Driver License or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Safety Requirement:Position requires that City approved safety shoes be worn.
