SUMMARY: Under the direction, to act as a lead worker in a licensed clinical laboratory unit; to perform the more complex laboratory tests; and to do related work as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  1. Assigns and reviews the work of a clinical laboratory unit; assists in training employees; provides input to management staff on performance evaluations and disciplinary matters; answers difficult questions and solves the more complex problems of a laboratory unit; maintains proper inventory levels of all reagents and supplies for a unit and reorders when necessary.

  2. Performs a variety of microbiological, hematological, chemical, parasitological, mycological and serological tests using manual/automated laboratory instruments.

  3. Maintains records and documentation on quality control procedures; performs preventative maintenance on each instrument to check for consequence of error; troubleshoots laboratory operations.

  4. Interfaces with laboratory management to provide on-going dialogue of changes, problems, and trends; assists management staff in planning and developing activities and may perform special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Two years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist II with Alameda County Medical Center, OR the equivalent of three years of full-time experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a licensed clinical laboratory, including on year in a lead or supervisory capacity. (A Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry or related field may be substituted for an additional two years of experience).

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Bioanalyst in California.
