Navarro Research and Engineering is recruiting a Transportation Specialist in Oak Ridge, TN.

  • Manages on-site transportation of contact-handled and remote-handled waste materials including newly-generated TRU waste - 700+ on-site shipments.

  • Develop and maintain transportation plan.

  • Trains co-workers; prepares and peer-reviews shipping papers; evaluates and approves drivers and vehicles in compliance with FMCSR and communicates with transporters and disposal facilities.

  • Maintains shipment schedules and provides them to waste management/waste certification and transportation personnel.

  • Communicates with waste management personnel to determine characterization needs, with waste coordinator to ensure shipping forecast is current and waste shipments are planned, approved, and executed accordingly, with nuclear material control & accountability (NMC&A) personnel to obtain approval, with Plant Shift Superintendent for emergency contact, with transporters for shipping schedules, and with receiving facilities for advanced notification and waste acceptance.

  • Classifies DOT hazardous materials in accordance with 49 CFR 172.101 and 49 CFR 173.2a. Determines appropriate containers in accordance with 49 CFR 172.101 and 49 CFR 173 containment specifications.

  • Instructs operations personnel on compliant marking/labeling of packages.

  • Prepares all shipping papers.

  • Ships samples to off-site laboratories.

  • Performs pre-shipment peer reviews of shipping documents generated by other project transportation specialist.

  • Notifies TSDFs prior to shipment. Inspects trailers to verify FMCSR are met.

  • Collaborates with RADCON to obtain radiological surveys.

  • Oversees loading and securing of containers on trucks in accordance with the Cargo Securement Plan.

  • Provides required placards to drivers at time of shipment and verifies that placards have been applied.

  • Works with QA to oversee inspection of containers prior to shipment using a methodical and detailed checklist of inspection criteria.

  • Communicates with NMC&A when shipments leave site so they can make their required notifications, including important information regarding point of origin, destination, date of departure/arrival, material type, mode of transport, and frequency.

Requirements

5 years of experience performing “like-type” work and advanced training in DOT requirements covering air, highway, and rail shipments of Hazardous Materials, including radioactive materials and waste.

The historical and expected workload typically requires 2-4 offsite waste shipments per Week.

Due to the nature of the government contract requirements and/or clearances requirements, US citizenship is required.
