POSITION DESCRIPTION The main duties include, but are not limited to: The Environmental Engineer/Specialist directly supports the Sustainability & Environmental Programs Manager in the Execution of UCOR’s Environmental Sustainability Program, specifically the development, monitoring, reporting, and improvement of resource use, pollution prevention, and climate resilience and adaptation initiatives for continual improvement in sustainability performance. The Environmental Engineer/Specialist will perform environmental assessments of company processes and activities; accumulate and maintain accurate and current data on environmental indicators and performance; apply mathematical accurate and current data on environmental indicators and performance; apply mathematical and engineering calculations to quantify the impact of company environmental aspects such as the production of greenhouse gas emissions; help to design metrics and trend significant environmental indicators; coordinate environmental data for reporting of environmental performance; identify local climate projections using nationally recognized and DOE recommended climate data resources; measure and report environmental impacts of company on community; recommend measures to reduce the company’s carbon footprint; characterize and recommend mitigative and adaptive measures to be implemented in response to potential future extreme climate events; participate in the planning, implementation, and closure of projects to provide recommendations for improved sustainability; interact with other DOE site subject matter experts for benchmarking and reporting; and, work closely with the Pollution Prevention Coordinator to identify innovative opportunities for continual improvement. The Environmental Scientist is primarily responsible for: Contributing to the development of approaches that will be used to guide company decisions, processes, and activities toward a reduced carbon footprint and other improvements in environmental sustainability. Applying principles of mathematics, engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to quantify environmental aspects, assess their potential impacts, assign a risk level, and recommend resilience measures Supporting a sustainable procurement and supply chain process, including contributing to the assessment of life cycle costs of new technologies, produces, and services Performing environmental assessments of company processes and activities and developing a baseline of environmental data including water and energy use, air quality, waste generation and management, land preservation and management, etc. Measuring and trending site environmental data against federal and state sustainability goals Taking primary technical responsibility for the collection of accurate and complete data for reporting of significant environmental indicators and performance, including accumulating data and developing narrative to Site Sustainability Reporting and Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Reporting. Designing tools, communications, and promotions that will engage the workforce to understand environmental impacts, adopt new sustainability initiatives, and encourage personal to recommend continual improvements in the sustainability of their projects and activities Developing and maintaining written procedure for environmental assessment and sustainability performance monitoring and measurement Keeping abreast of trends, laws, orders, regulations, and best practices in environmental sustainability Implementing the elements of the EMS in the performance and presentation of work, including contributing to the assignment of significance to environmental aspects Working with internal and external Interested Parties, including the EMS and P2 Coordinator, Program & Sustainability organization personnel, project personnel, administrative and support personnel, subject matter experts, and DOE site personnel, for excellent sustainability performance Job Knowledge Working knowledge and practical application of environmental modeling, site environmental assessments, climate change impact assessments, and life cycle assessments Experience with environmental data measurement, monitoring, interpretation, and presentation Familiarity with waste management and pollution prevention practices Oral, written, and graphic communication and presentation skills EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s or higher degree in engineering, environmental science, or related field. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) strongly desired. Minimum 4 years professional experience in engineering/environmental science discipline. Experience in corporate environment preferred. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Expereince in pollution prevention, waste minimization, and sustainable acquisition. Knowledge and understanding of federal environmental orders, standards, procedures, rules, and regulations as they relate to sustainability, pollution prevention, and waste minimization. Competent in the use of mathematical principles and statistical methods. Excellent research, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Familiarity with the use of Python or SQL programming language strongly desired. Familiarity with the use of Python or SQL programming language strongly desired. Familiarity with the use of climate assessment applications available from NOAA, USGS, EPA, and other federal and state resources. Proficient in various Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, Access, Projects, and PowerPoint). Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a diverse work environment, Pre-placement physical examination, which includes drug screening, and inclusion in random drug testing program. Ability to fulfill and promote L&A core values.
