Novelis Cost Engineer, VIU in Novi, Michigan

The role Cost Engineer, Value-in-Use (VIU) is a key member of the Customer Solution Center (CSC) in Novi, Michigan. Novelis CSC mission is to develop structural designs for global automotive OEMs that provide value using Novelis aluminum sheet products. The cost engineer works in conjunction with Novelis design, simulation, and joining engineers as well as customer design and manufacturing engineers to estimate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for OEMs to produce BIW/door/battery structural parts and assemblies. These TCO estimations are used to guide design teams to produce the highest value design solutions for Novelis’ customers.

Cost Engineer must communicate cost and value-in-use of Novelis design proposals of basic and new innovations in detail to automotive OEMs and feedback back to Novelis to enhance understanding of OEM needs and competitive position proposals.

As part of the CSC team the incumbent will create and modify VIU calculations for different solutions in order to identify cost drivers and least cost approaches for automotive closures, BIWs and battery cases.

Profound understanding of internal and external production processes is mandatory for this role. Intensive interaction will be required with regional finance and production as well as Global Automotive to capture the right process and product cost parameters for VIU calculation models.

Working intensively with our customers, the VIU Expert will have insight into Novelis’ internal cost structure as well as into the customer’s cost structure to develop a “common view on cost”. This exposure to sensitive commercial information from both sides makes this a position of highest trust. The aim is to change the conversations we have with our customers: From material supplier to solution provider – and inviting them in to drive the process.

By quantifying VIU, the value of using Novelis products becomes evident. This knowledge will be used to proliferate the use of aluminum sheet in automotive. The conclusions from VIU projects will influence Novelis’ Product Management, R&D and Strategy going forward.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare manufacturing scenarios and VIU calculations with the support from team members and external resources

  • Report on related projects and lessons learned for future application at other OEMs, and suggestions on necessary alloy improvements to enable optimized structural and thus BIW performance

  • Participate in automotive development projects and meet assigned project commitments and project timelines / deliverables.

  • Manage external engineering suppliers on project basis according to milestones, deliverables and budget.

  • Communicate best practices, OEM targets and cost drivers to improve development focus, R&D platform strategy and identify innovation targets

  • Work closely together with part performance (CAE), joining engineers, and design (CAD) experts

  • Evaluate potential benefits for implementation of innovation

  • Propose and promote approaches from other materials to increase application of Novelis products

Qualifications

  • A successful candidate will have 5+ years of relevant professional experience in business analysis and and/or product engineering environment

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required, Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Material Science. Master’s degree preferred
