WSP has an opportunity for a Principal Hydrogeologist to join our UK and Ireland Mine Water team on a full-time, permanent basis in one of our offices in London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Edinburgh or Naas (Ireland).

Our UK and Ireland Mine Water team is formed of groundwater, surface water and geochemistry professionals with experience ranging from graduate level to 30 plus years of experience. This presents an opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues with different areas of technical expertise and to mentor more junior team members. We contribute to all parts of the mining life cycle, from exploration and pre-feasibility through to mine closure.

This role is predominantly within the mining business, with the potential to also work with other local sectors including infrastructure and land development.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver consulting services in the areas of conceptual model development, mine dewatering and mine water management, environmental impact assessments for the resource industry and water supply work.

  • Assist in the management of groundwater studies including design and implementation of groundwater monitoring programs, planning and supervision of aquifer testing programs, groundwater modelling studies and groundwater inflow assessments for pit and underground mines.

  • Project coordination, managing and participating actively in the development of budgets, schedules and plans for projects and proposals.

  • Mentor junior staff within the Mine Water team to support their career development, technical excellence and commercial awareness.

  • Project based travel and site work, working away both in the UK and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client need.

  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams on local, regional and international consulting projects, so they are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to client and WSP's standards.

  • Display a ‘safety first’ attitude in line with an interdependent health and safety culture, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to WSP’s health and safety policy and procedures.

This job description describes the principal purpose and main elements of the job. It is a guide to the nature of the main duties as they currently exist but it is not intended as a wholly comprehensive or permanent schedule of tasks. The post holder is expected to work flexibly and respond positively to changing business needs.

Essential

  • MSc Hydrogeology (or equivalent) combined with a BSc degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline (e.g. geology, mining, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, environmental science etc.).

  • Demonstrable field skills, which may include supervising borehole drilling, monitoring well installation, aquifer testing, installation of grouted vibrating wire piezometers, geotechnical and geological core logging.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written (in English).

  • Strong technical report writing skills and ability to guide / peer review junior contributions.

  • Experience of project management or coordination and strong financial tracking skills.

  • Experience of client interaction and maintaining strong client relationships.

  • Flexibility, willingness and ability to travel both locally and internationally.

  • Full UK Driving Licence or eqivalent

Desirable

  • Chartership or registered as a Professional Engineer with a relevant professional body.

  • Additional language skills (particularly Russian, Spanish or French).

  • Groundwater modelling skills (e.g. Groundwater Vistas, FeFlow, GoldSim, Seep/W).

  • Competency in a programming language (e.g. Python, R, C).
