Chenango County Recording Clerk in Norwich, New York

Chenango County's Clerk's Office has an immediate opening for a RECORDING CLERK. This is a clerical position in the Records Unit of the Chenango County Clerks Office. The work involves responsibility for reviewing, processing, indexing, recording, or filing legal instruments and other types of documents entered into the permanent records of the County Clerks Office. Duties also involve issuing pistol permits and licenses, gunsmith and gun dealer licenses, processing passport applications and notary renewals, computing and accepting recording fees and mortgage and transfer taxes on property transactions, and collecting and recording certain judicial fees for Supreme and County Court services. Incumbents also have responsibility for maintaining records and compiling reports. The work involves extensive interaction with the public and a high degree of thoroughness and accuracy when examining and processing documents. Employees in this position independently perform their duties within the scope of specific laws, office rules and procedures relating to the recording, indexing and filing of legal instruments and other records. At least one incumbent in this title will be required to obtain a Notary Public License and perform notarial functions for the public. While normally assigned to the recording unit, an employee in this class may, at times, be temporarily assigned to assist in the Motor Vehicle Unit. <p> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and EITHER: (A) Possession of an Associates Degree in Secretarial Science, Office Technology, Paralegal Studies, or a closely related field and one year of full-time paid clerical experience or its part-time equivalent which must have included customer service; OR (B) Three years of full-time paid clerical experience or its part-time equivalent, one year of which must have included customer service; OR (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above. Special Requirements: The appointing authority may require at least one incumbent in this position to obtain a Notary Public License following permanent appointment, and maintain such licensure throughout employment. The position has a 37 1/2 hour work week and starts at $18.89 per hour in 2024 and includes a full benefits package.<p> A civil service examination will be required for permanent appointment at a later date.
