Chenango County Heavy Equipment Operator in Norwich, New York

Chenango County's Department of Public Works has an opening for a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator. Positions with this job title are in the Chenango County Department of Public Works and in various Towns and Villages throughout Chenango County. The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of specialized heavy equipment used in road and bridge maintenance and construction projects, snow and ice removal, refuse removal, and other public works activities. The incumbent is required to perform recurring manual tasks related to the operation of equipment and other Laborer duties as assigned when not operating equipment. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator due to the more complex nature of equipment operated requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility for the safety of others. Incumbents perform their duties in inclement weather conditions and in a variety of hot and cold temperatures, and are required to work additional hours when needed to perform snow and ice removal activities, perform emergency storm damage cleanup activities, haul leachate and perform other necessary departmental activities. Duties of incumbents in this job title will vary by municipality. <p> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:(A) One year of full-time paid experience or its part-time equivalent in the operation of heavy automotive equipment; OR (B) Two years of full-time paid experience or its part-time equivalent in the operation of any type of automotive equipment. Special Requirement: 1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment an appointee/incumbent must possess the specific type of Commercial Drivers License required for the Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (HMEO) position they will hold. The required New York State Commercial Drivers License will either be a valid New York State CDL-B or a valid New York State CDL-A. 2. An appointing authority may require that a certain number of appointees to this job title possess an N (Tank), or an X (Tank and HazMat) license vehicle endorsement at the time of appointment and continuing throughout employment in the position. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Drivers License and a driving record acceptable to the Countys or school districts insurance carrier.<p> The position has a 40 hour work week and 2024 starting pay rate is $24.09 per hour and includes a full benefits package.
