Chenango County Correction Officer in Norwich, New York

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office has openings for CORRECTION OFFICERS. The work involves responsibility on an assigned shift for the enforcement of rules, regulations and policies governing the custody, security, conduct, discipline, safety and general well being of inmates in the County correctional facility. Duties involve considerable inmate contact and supervision. A Correction Officer books inmates and supervises them in work, rest, recreational and learning environments. Duties also include responsibility for driving or escorting inmates to various locations outside the County correctional facility and may include responsibility for guarding inmates admitted to a hospital. Work procedures are well defined but incumbents must be alert to possibilities of emergency situations arising and exercise sound judgment when problems occur. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Corrections Corporal, Corrections Sergeant or higher ranking officer. Supervision over the work of others is not a requirement of employees in this class. Does related work as required.<p> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. In accordance with the accreditation standards of the New York State Sheriff's Association, candidates must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.<br>

To meet the field work requirements of this position at time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate must possess a valid New York State Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the County's insurance carrier

A Civil Service examination will be required for permanent appointment at a later date.
