Amazon Manager, Applied Science, Amazon Robotics Autonomous Mobility in North Reading, Massachusetts

Description

The Amazon Robotics Autonomous Mobility team develops software that powers Proteus, Amazon Robotics’ first fully-autonomous mobile warehouse robot. We are growing and seek a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Applied Science Manager to lead our Motion Planning team in North Reading, MA. You will oversee and support a team of top-notch scientists and engineers developing state-of-the-art technologies and algorithms for motion planning and vehicle control to enable AMRs to safely, reliably and efficiently navigate through dynamic environments in the presence of humans and other vehicles. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, hands-on manager with a track record of leading and supporting product development teams that apply cutting-edge science to build high-performance, scalable and reliable systems that solve real-world problems. Experience in areas such as autonomous navigation, motion planning, multi-agent planning and coordination, and control systems is strongly desired.

Key job responsibilities

  • Define and execute a research & development roadmap for the motion planning team that appropriately balances near-term incremental improvements with long-term vision

  • Mentor and grow a team of talented, motivated applied scientists and software engineers

  • Establish and drive operational excellence best practices to ensure the team consistently produces and maintains high quality software.

  • Work with Product Management to define current and future AMR use-cases and align them with the Motion Planning team’s R&D efforts

  • Collaborate with partner tech teams in AR’s autonomous mobility program to align priorities, develop a cohesive system architecture, and identify cross-functional opportunities for improvement (e.g. improved performance, reduced complexity)

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience working in software development or related field

  • 3+ years of experience collaboratively managing engineers and scientists

  • Experience building high quality, scalable production software

  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in autonomous navigation or related scientific domain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, developing and deploying robotic systems

  • Experience leading and supporting R&D initiatives that require path finding through research and prototyping

  • A deep understanding of the software development process in a collaborative team setting, and a track record for delivering software on time.

  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas; Autonomous Navigation, Motion Planning and Control of Autonomous Vehicles, Multi-Agent Planning and Coordination, Reinforcement Learning

  • Experience working with sensors and hardware

  • Experience with simulation platforms and tools
