NJEDA Paralegal Associate - Legal Compliance in North Brunswick, New Jersey

Overview

Job Summary

The Legal Compliance Paralegal Associate supports the Legal Compliance departments for the Authority, including research and tracking of matters to support the Chief Compliance Officer, the Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, the Director of Legal Compliance, and the Director of Business Operations.

$58,080 - $72,600

Note: The NJEDA currently offers a hybrid work schedule for up to 2 days of telecommute work from home. To participate, you will be required to have high speed home internet access and a managers approval. This program does not supersede the "New Jersey First Act", which requires newly hired NJEDA employees to establish and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the Chief Compliance Officer, the Directors of Legal Compliance and Business Operations by: Tracking status and completion of Compliance audit information requests from auditors.

  • Supports the Chief Compliance Officer by: Tracking status and completion of compliance plans and supporting the preparation of training and communication on best practices in support of compliance plans.

  • Supports the Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs by: Monitoring expiration of rules to ensure none expire before readoption; Preparing draft documents for transmittal to the Office of Administrative Law; Tracking public comment on proposed regulations; keeping a record of the public engagement and stakeholder outreach process and supporting maintenance of the rulemaking record; and other related duties.

  • Supports the Director of Legal Compliance by tracking and reviewing documents referred as potentially invalid to Legal Compliance officers, and other related duties.

  • Supports all three departments by tracking changes in law, updating SharePoint based upon changes in law; Creates draft forms and updates to forms based upon changes in law; and drafts communication of changes in law with Legal Compliance Officers.

  • Conducts legal research as assigned by the Chief Compliance Officer; and provides brief summaries of the research.

  • Drafts legal correspondence; Formats and conducts citation checks to finalize legal correspondence for the Chief Compliance Officer.

  • Promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, NJEDA staff and external customers.

  • Must complete annual and semiannual self-assessment as required.

  • Performs other duties or special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of or ability to read, understand and communicate in layperson’s terms about legal requirements and documents

  • Must possess advanced research ability and information technology skills

  • Ability to prioritize workload, must be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously and work independently within limited time constraints with little or no supervision

  • Experience in rule writing and legislative/government affairs

  • Must possess knowledge of government, business and industry

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals, public officials, legislators, general public, trade organizations and EDA staff

  • Ability to obtain a thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the Authority

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff

  • Demonstrates respectful behavior and promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff and external customers

  • NJEDA utilizes Microsoft as the core application platform and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.

  • Experience with Lexis helpful

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university.

  • Paralegal certification preferred; Paralegal experience required.

  • Two to five years experience involving legal research and preparation of legal documents.

  • Minimum two years of experience with regulatory matters working for or representing a State, Federal or other public entity.

  • Experience conducting research on Lexis or Westlaw. Lexis preferred.

    Master’s Degree or other related advanced degree or industry specific certification may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
