Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for an Utility Maintenance Mechanic III in the Water Production Division. This person performs electrical and mechanical repairs on equipment, including installation, diagnosis, repairs, and preventive maintenance. Troubleshoots and makes repairs on electrical and mechanical equipment, including high voltage equipment.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Maintains equipment by conducting major repairs to all air and water cooling engines including completely rebuilding engines, repairing tractors, out front mowers, weed eaters, blowers and emergency equipment.

Conducts minor repairs by performing daily maintenance on frequently used equipment.

Performs related duties by conducting winter overhauls during the \"off season\", and doing minor electric work for building maintenance, turns valves to maintain water flow to the water plants. Performs cathodic protection on the raw water mains. Responsible for weekly and monthly PM at the City of Norfolk Pump Stations.

Supervises and oversees repair shop and yard in absence of supervisor by taking care of daily time sheets and work tickets, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance.

Performs related duties by writing specifications on equipment purchases.

Help maintain the pipeline raw water easement and locate raw water mains repairing and replacing air valves, assist in applying chemicals to the lakes.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Five years' experience as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic or Electrician.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Journeyman Electrical License may be required depending upon assignment.

Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Work Location: 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
