Basic Commerce & industries Systems Engineer, Senior (Bridge Ops OOD) in Norfolk, Virginia

Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc. (BCI) is seeking to fill a full-time Systems Engineer / Navy Subject Matter Expert (SME) in support of Steering and Propulsion Control Systems programs for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). BCI's areas of expertise include Human Systems Integration/Human Factors Engineering, Interoperability, Training, Operational Systems Safety, and Weapon and Combat Systems Engineering. BCI's work force of employees and consultants includes human factors engineers, operational engineers, and former naval officers and enlisted subject matter experts.

This position has the potential to be located in any fleet concentration center or other remote locations.

Experience Required:

Successful candidates must be a former Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), Limited Duty Officer (LDO) or Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) with a minimum of 10 years US Navy active duty experience. Must have 15 years combined active duty and/or acquisition, engineering, training, or other operationally-related experience. Must have experience on Surface Combatant Ships to include a deployment in support of battle group operations with an Officer of the Deck (OOD) qualification. Experience as an OOD on a CVN or amphibious class surface ship is strongly desired. Combat Systems experience related to Aegis Combat and Weapons Systems or Ship Self Defense System (SSDS), and/or Shipboard Navigation Systems is also required. Experience with the design, evaluation, or training of bridge systems or steering and propulsion control systems is preferred. A bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution is required; a degree supporting systems engineering, software engineering or significant analysis experience preferred. Qualifications as Tactical Action Officer (TAO) and/or Navy Instructor/Master Training Specialist (MTS) are desired.

Description of Duties:

Provide operational expertise to the design, integration, and evaluation of surface ship steering and propulsion systems, including integration with navigation, engineering, and other bridge systems. Apply understanding of the use of steering and propulsion systems across the bridge team and for special evolutions to development, validation, and verification of requirements for steering and propulsion control systems. Support the collection of fleet user feedback and for the evaluation and improvement of steering and propulsion systems, with a focus on commonality across surface ship platforms.

Periodic visits to system developer or test sites and surface navy fleet concentration areas will be required, which is expected to require a travel rate around 10%.
