We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative leader to serve as Director of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) for the Ship Repair business unit within BAE Systems, Inc. The Director of SHE will provide strategic and tactical leadership for a geographically dispersed business unit comprised of 4,000 employees responsible for performing significant industrial work in support of the US Navy across three sites (Norfolk, VA; Jacksonville, FL; and San Diego, CA). The Director of SHE will lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of SHE Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) with diverse backgrounds. This position reports directly to the Vice President and General Manager of Ship Repair and you will work closely with senior leadership to provide value-added solutions and support.
Location/Travel:
This role can be based out of one of the Shipyards in Norfolk, VA; Jacksonville, FL; or San Diego, CA.
This position will require 50% of travel, mainly to the three shipyards.
Responsibilities:
Strategically lead and improve the Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) program for the Ship Repair business across the shipyards in Norfolk, VA; Jacksonville, FL; and San Diego, CA.
Passionately champion Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) while aligning the program goals with site, business, and organizational objectives.
Lead, mature, and advance an inclusive Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) organization while remaining agile to shifting needs, industry trends, and program challenges.
Develop and implement cutting-edge strategies for creating, sustaining, and evolving a safety culture.
Develop and implement complex safety programs and leverage industry programs and benchmark practices.
Provide strategic direction, supervision, and guidance to ensure alignment with SHE policy, strategic objectives, and organization goals that drive to zero incident plans and strategy.
Collaborate cross-functionally in a matrix environment across three shipyards to influence and drive Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) as a core organizational value.
Provides oversight of day-to-day safety, environmental, and risk management including collaboration with site operations executives in the alignment of goals, objectives, standards, and best practices across departments; removal of barriers; allocation of resources; and consistency in safety communications.
Interface with senior executive leaders and lead cultural and behavioral change that integrates Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) into daily operations.
Lead integrated senior management teams to determine strategy and tactical deployment, improve performance, lower costs, and generate innovative solutions.
Influence decision-making in a dynamic environment and respond to changing internal and external customer demands and Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) risks.
Effectively communicate with all employees and senior leadership throughout the organization to promote Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) initiatives.
Serve as a hands-on leader responsible for resolving technical challenges, ensuring successful tactical execution, and creating and implementing the strategic vision.
Serve as a visible leader who takes a kind and collaborative approach with others and comes across as approachable.
Connects well with individuals at all levels of the organization, builds appropriate rapport and constructive and effective relationships.
Develop SHE staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, developing, mentoring, and coaching team.
Exhibit a high degree of technical credibility and communicates highly technical information in a simplistic and easily understandable way.
Manage compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and established company standards to minimize risk to employees and liability to the business.
Recommend corrective actions, dispositions, process optimization, and modifications.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, or related field and 12 years work experience or equivalent experience
12 years of progressive leadership experience in Safety with a strong knowledge of OSHA regulations
Proven ability to develop strategies and drive financial results as it relates to implementation of safety practices, initiatives, and programs
Proven record of influencing key decision-makers at an executive level regarding safety strategies
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to define a clear vision and motivate others in a positive way to achieve desired results and develop a successful teams
Proven integrator that uses synergistic approach to problem solving, analysis, metrics, and prevention
Knowledge and experience with OSHA 18001 Safety Management System including conducting internal audits to ensure compliance
Proactive communicator and relater who can interface effectively at all levels in the company and can appropriately influence business results through negotiation, persuasion, and personal presence
Proven record of savvy business judgment along with the mental agility and flexibility required in a dynamic company
Demonstrated strong consultative and influencing skills with proven ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse difficult situations
Self-driven and resourceful professional with the ability to solve problems outside area of expertise
Demonstrated ability to leverage analytics and identify trends
Proven ability to benchmark both internally and externally to achieve best practices
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced multi-cultural environment with minimal direction

Possess unquestioned ethics and integrity

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Master's Degree in Occupational Safety or Safety Engineering and/or MBA
Certifications: CSHO, CSP, CESCO, or REM
Proven success reducing incident rates and improving the safety culture
Proven experience interfacing with regulatory agencies
Experience in managing a VPP program for an industrial site
International experience
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $146900 - $249700
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
