Norton Sound Health Corporation Water and Wastewater Engineer in Nome, Alaska

Purpose of Position:

The water and wastewater Engineer will manage the technical arm of the sanitation program at Norton Sound Health Corporation. This position will coordinate with project stakeholders to implement capital improvement projects to sanitation infrastructure in 15 communities in the Bering Strait Region. This position will also support the operations, maintenance, and administration of the existing regional sanitation systems.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees the Sanitation Department staff members regarding construction, operations and maintenance tasks, and assignments at a project site.
  • Directs and oversees the Remote Maintenance Worker Program (2-3 employees).
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders (State, Federal, City, Tribe, Village Corporations, Consultants) and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction, designs, modifications, and repairs of a variety of water and sanitation projects.
  • Communicates frequently with community utilities (water operators, City and Tribal leadership) to aid with operation and maintenance of their water and sanitation systems.
  • Assesses planning, review and evaluation and design of water supply distribution networks, storage tanks, pump stations, sanitary sewer collection systems, lift stations, water and wastewater treatment plants and other related projects.
  • Coordinates regional training for water operators and sanitation facility administrators.
  • Coordinates with local utilities to meet regional, state, and federal laws and recommendations.
  • Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data.
  • Estimates materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs.
  • Conducts on-site construction inspections and collaborates with contractors to ensure projects progress properly and meet design specification, safety, and arctic sanitation standards.
  • Provides quarterly written reports for various state, federal and private grants on status updates.
  • Conducts on-site troubleshooting and analysis complex sanitation problems relating to sanitation facilities.
  • Conducts all activities consistent with health and safety requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
