This role supports Helmer Scientific, part of Trane Technologies Life Sciences Portfolio. Helmer Scientific designs, integrates, manufactures, markets, and distributes specialized medical and laboratory equipment to clinical and life science customers in over 125 countries, as well as provide after-market service and support.

The Sustaining Mechanical Engineer VAVE will identify, lead, and manage projects involving product redesign for value analysis value engineering (VAVE/ cost reduction). Supports organization through product design changes, prototyping, risk mitigation/testing, specification updates, new design implementation and communication to the organization. Supports mechanical design for sheet metal parts, machined parts, castings, plastics and packaging among other disciplines. Lead VAVE projects through ideation, business casing, charter creation, design and implementation. Support sustaining engineering as required through other various projects.

What you will do:

  • Promotes Helmer values as demonstrated in personal productivity and quality of work, management of internal/external relationships, actively seeking out and participating in Continuous Improvement practices, and willingness to engage and support team initiatives.

  • Comply with workplace safety procedures.

  • Lead VAVE ideation activities utilizing internal and external resources

  • Management of assigned projects utilizing gannt charts, charters, business casing and other project management tools.

  • Lead design and development of VAVE projects including risk mitigation, DFMEA,V&V testing and all required documentation (Product/Design History files, change orders, etc).

  • Support implementation including inventory PIPO, PPAP, etc of new design into on-site manufacturing or outside supplier manufacturing.

  • Work in a cross functional team and support cross functional communication of assigned projects to the organization and to leader.

  • Provide engineering support as needed to daily product manufacturing to improve and maintain current product portfolio including design modification, non-conformance disposition, component alternatives, problem solving fit and mechanical issues and verification testing of updated design.

  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

What you will bring:

Relative Work Experience:

  • 5 or more years related engineering design experience required, preferably in manufacturing environment.

  • Medical device or related regulated industry experience preferred

  • 3D CAD part/assembly modeling and detailing required

  • Mechanical tolerance stack up experience required

  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5-1994) preferred

  • DFMEA and DFM/DFA experience required

  • Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical troubleshooting experience preferred

  • Preferred experience with refrigeration including troubleshooting, system design and thermodynamic theory

  • Experience with VAVE ideation and project management preferred

  • Experience with sheet metal, machining, investment casting, and welding processes preferred

  • Experience with fabrication equipment including press brakes, lathe and mill preferred

  • Experience with test protocol writing and verification required.

  • Experience with product validation preferred.

  • Experience with conducting and analyzing DOE, 7-Quality Tools, and Lean Six Sigma tools preferred.

  • Experience with Bills of Materials required

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET accredited school.

Certifications / Licenses:

  • None required, Lean manufacturing and six sigma training desired

Computer Systems / Software:

  • 2D CAD experience is a plus, Autocad CAD preferred

  • 3D CAD experience required, Autodesk Inventor preferred

  • ERP required, Fourth Shift preferred

Specialized Training:

  • Knowledge of FDA regulations and/or ISO 13485 preferred

  • Engineering change order experience required

Compensation:

Total Target Compensation: Range is $80,000 - $110,000

Total Target Cash represents a mix of fixed base salary plus payment from sales commissions. Sales commissions plans are uncapped plans.
