Niagara Charter School is a free public school with an extended school day. We serve students in grades K-6 and provide them with the education and skills needed to succeed in the 21st century. We are seeking qualified candidates for a full-time School Counselor. The school counselor is responsible for coordinating appropriate school counseling services with students and school staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, administrators, and other professionals to discuss children's' progress, resolve behavioral, academic, and other problems, and to determine priorities for students and their resource needs

  • Observe students during classroom and play activities to evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health

  • Evaluate students' or individuals' abilities, interests, and personality characteristics using tests, records, interviews, or professional sources

  • Evaluate the need for individual students to be referred to appropriate social services

  • Identify cases of domestic abuse or other family problems and encourage students or parents to seek additional assistance from mental health professionals

  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations

  • Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration

  • Prepare students for later educational experiences by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks

  • Provide crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at schools

  • Stay current with regulation, legal requirements, and funding streams for various social programs

  • Keep abreast of the wide variety of programs that may be accessed by students at school

  • Work with CAO, AAO, and other student support staff to make parents aware of available services

  • Coordinate with CAO, AAO, and other staff to ensure students in need are identified

  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs and in the preparation of master schedules for curriculum offerings to accommodate special needs of individual students

  • Other tasks as assigned by the CAO, AAO or designee
