Job Description

Mission Technologies, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking a Specification Writer to develop procedures used for the operation of equipment and systems aboard modern nuclear submarines, and other manuals used for the training of personnel and maintenance of these systems.

As new or modernized equipment is installed aboard submarines, the Specification Writer examines the technical documentation (drawings, specification sheets, etc.) and procedures (technical manuals, component procedures and descriptions, etc.) supplied by vendors, design engineers, and agencies to develop standardized procedures and manuals. These will be used by submariners and maintenance personnel who will be maintaining and testing these systems.

The Specification Writer works with other writers, engineers, supply vendors, and the Navy to ensure the best and complete information is made available to the submarine fleet.

What You Will Do:

  • Prepare specifications from engineering change notices, customer specifications, and/or published data sheets

  • Maintain customer specification files; review customer drawings and data; translate customer language into standard procedures and product flow

Essential Job Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 years additional education and/or related experience

  • Have b ackground experience in shipboard combat systems, sonar systems, navigation systems, or operational Naval Nuclear power experience

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance

  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat

Preferred Requirements

  • Possess operational and maintenance experience on submarine combat control systems, sonar systems, exterior communications systems, navigation systems, or electronic warfare systems.

  • Naval Nuclear Power operational experience preferred

Physical Requirements

Most work is performed in an office environment with the possibility of some time spent aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Able to work on and climb ladders. Able to work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Environment may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
