The Role

Electrical System Design Leadership

  • Lead the design, development, and integration of the electrical distribution system and subcomponents for future technology development of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program submarines.

  • Ensure compliance with Navy specifications, industry standards, and shipbuilding requirements. Lead requirement development to meet Navy capability needs for future platforms.

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure electrical distribution integrates with other subsystems like propulsion, navigation, weapons, and combat systems. Work closely with other engineering teams acting as the primary technical interface between NNS and US Navy stakeholders to ensure final delivery of as designed products.

  • Present technical information to senior management and Navy stakeholders to explain complex engineering issues and solutions.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers on electrical distribution system design, testing, and troubleshooting best practices.

  • Lead first principles based team design methodology and design basis meetings to foster continuous improvement.

Technical Oversight

  • Provide technical leadership for the development of notional power distribution architectures including load analysis development and determination of required initial assumptions.

  • Review and approve technical drawings, schematics, and engineering design changes related to the electrical distribution system.

  • Perform load analysis, power quality analysis, fault analysis, system stability assessments, and ensure system reliability under varied operational and transient conditions.

  • Ensure all recommended systems meet applicable regulations, codes, and certification standards (e.g., MIL-STDs, IEEE, NEC, etc.)

Project Management

  • Oversee project schedules, timelines, resource allocation, and milestone tracking to ensure the on-time delivery of electrical distribution system components and subsystems.

  • Interface with program management, subcontractors, suppliers, and customers to ensure alignment with project objectives.

Risk Management

  • Identify risks associated with the design and implementation of recommended systems and develop mitigation strategies.

  • Perform root cause analysis for design or operational issues and implement design corrections as necessary.

This benchmark is intended to be used by companies that have generic classifications engaged in research and/or product development encompassing primarily one or more of the following engineering disciplines: electronics, electrical, mechanical, and/or chemical.

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience

Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

-Experience presenting complex technical information to customers at Naval Nuclear Laboratories (NNL) and Naval Reactors (NR).

-Experience designing engineering products for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP).

-Experience mentoring and teaching new engineers in both a technical and programmatic capacity.

-Experience performing physics based modeling and simulation analysis for notional electrical power plant designs (i.e., load flow studies,

fault analysis, stability analysis).

-Experience with software modeling tools such as Matlab/Simulink, ETAP, EasyPower, Paladin, ANSYS, etc.

-Control systems design experience relative to electrical power generation, distribution, and transmission.
