Job Description:

Switchboard Operator - Per Diem

Performs telecommunications services for the hospital, managing both in-house and incoming calls. Provides necessary information services for visitors. Manages safety and emergency situations at the switchboard.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Relays incoming, outgoing and interoffice calls using the telephone switchboard.

  • Relays information over paging and beeper systems as needed.

  • Displays patience and tact when dealing with hospital personnel.

  • Presents the department in a positive manner to visitors, vendors, and hospital personnel.

  • Maintains courteous and pleasant attitude 100% of the time to patients, family and staff.

  • Maintains confidential patient and department information.

  • Manages emergency situations for fire and safety as they arise.

  • Responds immediately to Code Blue calls and completes necessary communication.

  • Responds immediately to Code Red, Code 444 phone calls and alarms. Completes necessary communications.

  • Responds to Maintenance, Security and Code Alert alarms immediately and completes necessary communication.

  • Log all information in log book as required.

  • Provides information services to staff, visitors and patients.

  • Trains new switchboard operators as assigned by the chief information officer.

  • Trains switchboard operators for the proper operation of the board, security systems, and paging systems.

  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence.

  • Attends all mandatory departmental and hospital in-services. Follows written goals and objectives.

  • Seeks education and learning experience in areas of identified growth needs.

Required Skills

Communication:

Must possess verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and courteously with a diverse group of professional and non-professional members of the health care team, patients and family/significant others.

Minimum Education

High School Graduate

Minimum Work Experience

One to two years in general switchboard experience preferred
