Unit Equipment Engineer

The Equipment Engineer provides engineering support to the Unit issues that are impacting production. In this role the engineer provides technical expertise which may be equipment based or repair technique based which impacts the availability and maintainability of the Unit. Interfaces with plant reliability engineering, process engineer and maintenance team to implement systems-based efforts in respective areas and implement long term improvements. Provides coaching and mentorship to process engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in equipment failures and repair techniques during root cause investigations.

  • Provides technical expertise to Unit personnel on troubleshooting failures, repairs, and evaluating whether equipment is designed to meet its intended or existing service conditions.

  • Leads/participates in downtime related RCIs

  • For equipment that is critical for the process ensures that work requests include engineering input on repair details such as clearances, tolerances, materials of construction, welding procedures, etc. and if necessary provide onsite/offsite technical support for deviations from this data.

  • Ensures troubleshooting guides are created as appropriate and kept up to date.

  • Provides maintainability input to capital project process

  • Support PSM elements as applicable

  • During development of turnaround, provides input on development of work orders particularly on critical equipment requiring engineering review or input.

  • Reliability reviewer on minor capital projects

  • Leads unit level OEE programs and participates in OEE reviews.

  • Provides deeper level understanding of MTBF (mean time between failure) and improvement plan.

  • Works cross functionally to support continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required - Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience (manufacturing, reliability, engineering, etc.)

  • The ability to solve problems and prioritize and execute multiple tasks simultaneously is needed.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead through influence; able to take a "hands-on" approach with operators, technicians, and engineers to drive change and get results while working cross functionally with operations, maintenance and other functional groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification preferred.

  • Statistical Analysis (JMP, Minitab)

  • Strategic thinking
