Position Summary

The Senior Associate is a member of the Risk Insights Team within the Underwriting Department of Retail Life. His/her primary focus is to support the new business underwriting and inforce service areas by investigating suspicious activity, vetting critical information to verify information on an applicant, and make recommendations regarding necessary actions based upon the findings. The Senior Associate is expected to communicate findings and propose solutions to address issues identified to business area management as appropriate. The individual is required to have a strong skillset in Excel and other analytical tools such as Spotfire or Tableau. He/she will be required to utilize verification tools such as LexisNexis to support the research and investigation.

This individual will work independently with other members of the Risk Insights team and Underwriting at large and will serve as a liaison with management to other business units such as Agency Standards, Corporate Compliance and the Special Investigations Unit. He/she will also work with adjacent teams (e.g. Strategic Capabilities) and functions (e.g. Technology) as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Performing data analysis and testing to detect fraud, unusual patterns/red flags or non-compliance with company policy and identifying actions to address any significant deficiencies and control issues.

  • Leading efforts to gather and review metrics needed to recommend actions to the Enhanced Underwriting committee, as well as maintaining and implementing changes to the Enhanced Underwriting list.

  • Having the ability to independently navigate large amounts of data/data sources and develop reports for key strategic initiatives and Underwriting management.

  • Being able to identify and interpret patterns and trends, assess data quality and eliminate irrelevant data.

  • Clearly and concisely articulating in written and verbal communication the findings of the analysis and investigations performed.

  • Consulting with internal customers to develop analyses that lead to actionable insights.

  • Creating and managing analytical tools that transform operational data into actionable insight.

  • Assisting other business areas to understand underwriting data and how to use it appropriately.

  • Continuing to create new control mechanisms that prevent or detect violations or potential fraud.

  • Leading or participating in special projects as assigned related to potential fraud, schemes or gaps in controls.

  • Expected to gain a thorough understanding of the business, to make recommendations for additional reviews where there may be gaps.

Experience

  • Strong data analysis aptitude; pays close attention to detail

  • Understanding of New York Life products, services, and administrative systems preferred.

  • Strong management skills to prioritize and implement multiple medium to large scale complex initiatives simultaneously.

  • Ability to work with little supervision

  • Advanced Excel knowledge. Spotfire or Tableau knowledge also preferred, but not required.

  • Must have the ability to multitask under tight deadlines.

  • Excellent business writing skills.

  • Prior business knowledge required, preferably, Underwriting, Inforce Service, or Agency experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • 5+ years’ analytics experience required

  • 5+ years’ experience with Microsoft Excel

  • 1+ years prior insurance knowledge required, preferably Underwriting, Product, Inforce Service or Agency experience
