Citigroup Underwriter - AVP in New York, New York

Citi continues to enhance its business control and governance framework by building out Institutional Credit Management (ICM), a new function in the 1st Line of Defense, to house and consistently manage credit risk activities performed across its Institutional Client Group organization . ICM provides integrated “end-to-end” credit underwriting, identification, measurement, management, and monitoring for wholesale credit risk across the enterprise. Within ICM, the Credit Underwriting function (ICM-UW) provides analysis, underwriting, first-line-of-defense credit approval and subsequent credit monitoring.

The Underwriter will hold a critical role within the ICM by applying in-depth disciplinary knowledge, contributing to the development of new techniques and the improvement of processes and workflows for the area or function. The Underwriter will integrate subject matter and industry expertise within a defined area. The successful candidate must have an in-depth understanding of how areas collectively integrate within the sub-function as well as coordinate and contribute to the objectives of the function and overall business. The selected candidate must be able to evaluate moderately complex and variable issues with substantial potential impact, where development of an approach/taking of an action involves weighing various alternatives and balancing potentially conflicting situations using multiple sources of information. The ideal candidate requires strong analytical skills in order to filter, prioritize and validate potentially complex and dynamic materials from multiple sources. The selected candidate will regularly assume informal/formal leadership roles within teams and will be involved in coaching and training of new recruits. The Underwriter AVP will have a significant impact in terms of project size, geography, etc. by influencing decisions through advice, counsel and/or facilitating services to others in area of specialization. Strong communication, diplomacy and leadership skills are required. Work and performance of all teams in the area are directly affected by the performance of the individual.

Responsibilities:

Ensure Credit Approval Memo (CAM) packages are complete, accurate and thoroughly documented.

Support Senior Underwriters in making recommendations/credit decisions, including risk ratings and regulatory classifications.

Conduct in-depth analyses of financial data and other information provided by clients.

Conduct projection modeling, stress testing and other analyses using research and evaluations from a wide variety of sources.

Assess deal strengths, weaknesses and risk factors.

Ensure all transactions are follow regulatory and Citi guidelines, policies and procedures.

Remain current on all aspects of the credit relationship, including exposure, compliance, and potential credit concerns.

Oversee periodic relationship credit monitoring including Annual Reviews (ARs), Quarterly Reviews (QRs), and Criticized Credit Reviews (CCRs).

Inform bankers of any deterioration in operating performance based on financial reporting.

Support Senior Underwriters during internal reviews (FCR, COBRA, IA) and external regulatory exam responses.

Ensure to be fully conversant on safe and sound risk practices within Real Estate Credit including all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their Portfolio.

Qualifications:

5-8 years relevant experience.

Previous experience working in Residential Real Estate underwriting or credit preferably in the financial services industry.

Strong familiarity with rating agency methodologies, preferably in securitizations and non-bank financial institutions.

Ability to apply credit and risk principles toward business goals.

Demonstrated ability to synthesize, prioritize and drive results with a high sense of urgency.

Highly organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment managing multiple projects and possess effective interpersonal, organizational and analytic skills.

Solid organizational skills with ability and willingness to work under pressure and manage time and priorities effectively with little to no supervision.

Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to audiences of varying levels of seniority.

Bachelor’s/University degree or equivalent experience
