The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate II in New York, New York

The Center for Translational & Computational Neuroimmunology (CTCN), in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is a hub for large-scale translational human studies that integrate rigorous application of advanced laboratory techniques with cutting-edge computational methods. The CTCN includes a Neuroimmunology Core that is part of the national Alzheimer's Disease Research Center network in the U.S., and it specializes in the optimization and deployment of novel experimental platforms to support the projects of CTCN investigators and collaborators.

We are currently seeking a staff associate to join our research effort in the CNS tissue-based profiling. We are deploying cutting-edge spatial transcriptomic technologies coupled to a robust image capture and semi-automated image segmentation pipeline to enable the large-scale projects that are currently funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Sections paraffin embedded or frozen tissue using a microtome or cryostat.
  • May operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment.
  • Oversee sample archives and performs routine QC for different samples types.
  • Oversee and coordinate instrument maintenance, updates and repairs.
  • Assist in developing and update SOPs and implementing new spatial transcriptomic protocols and procedures.
  • May assist with planning specific research procedures and coordinating schedules of tests and procedures with the user.
  • May prepare written and/or verbal reports on status of research and the technical procedures used.

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-4 years of work related experience
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Experience (but not required)

  • Reagent preparation (solution, buffer and medium), DNA/RNA extraction and purification from tissues or cells, PCR/qPCR and molecular cloning.
  • Tissue sectioning, paraffin-embedded / frozen
  • Problem solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Written communications: Ability to read and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with the users; and respond to basic questions.
  • Oral communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with the users in response to routine questions.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations.
  • Teamwork: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  • Customer service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests. As a Core facility, we have a responsibility to do everything in our power to complete our users' projects.
