City of New York Special Investigation PFC Unit - Summer College Intern in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is an investigative unit within the Department of Correction and remains at the forefront of this Agency’s continued commitment to integrity and accountability. This unit has been given a broad range of responsibilities in monitoring the activities of this Agency’s personnel and investigating incidents throughout the Department. The ID operates from a Headquarters Command Center (“HQ”), and two (2) satellite locations on Rikers Island. The selected interns will be responsible for assisting the teams with investigative actions, field work and administrative tasks associated with the investigations:

  • Shadowing PREA Facility Compliance Staff conducting field work in the DOC facilities which includes interviewing PICS (persons’ in custody), collection of evidence (Reports, logbooks etc.)

  • Assist in the review and summarization of evidence (i.e. Genetec surveillance video, Securus phone calls, reports etc.)

  • Handling confidential and time sensitive documents (i.e. Intake Questionnaires, Safety Checks, SCU Applications, Spreadsheets).

  • The selected candidate will retrieve and move files, perform data entry and work on special projects as needed. Other related functions may include administrative tasks (i.e. filing, copying, fax/scan, answer telephone, and front desk operation).

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
