Microsoft Corporation Senior Technical Program Manager in New York, New York

Do you have experience with technical program management AND experience working with researchers? Are you excited to help transition ambitious research ideas into practice, to help us build the future for Microsoft and the world?

Microsoft Research is hiring a Senior Technical Program Manager to work with our research labs in New England (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and New York City (Manhattan). You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with our lab in Montreal. Across these labs, research areas include Machine Learning, Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI), Sociotechnical Systems, Economics, and Computational Social Science. Technical PMs may work across these areas, depending on their areas of technical expertise.

For you to be successful in this role, you need to bring experience working with research or applied research teams, and a growth mindset. You will need to be persistent, creative, and comfortable with navigating ambiguity. Because you are deeply collaborative, you’ll be able to work with a network of experts at the exciting forefront of today’s rapid advances in AI, with plenty of room to contribute to new innovations at Microsoft.

Responsibilities

  • Gain trust with research leads by communicating effectively and demonstrating deep understanding of their research advances and partnership efforts to date

  • Start to identify potential value propositions and to prioritize new collaborative opportunities with potential to result in high-impact innovation; grow your independence to select among options

  • Contribute to definition of collaborative project goals, success criteria and ongoing prioritization of deliverables; grow your independence to manage ambiguity and ensure compliance throughout

  • Communicate research and project impacts internally, and externally in partnership with Microsoft’s Communications teams; grow your executive communication skills

  • Partner with Business Program Managers to oversee and systematize lab programs and initiatives as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree AND 4+ years experience in computer science, engineering, or technical program/product management

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 2+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects

  • 3+ months of work or educational experience in a research or applied research environment, focused on technical or sociotechnical problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in computer science, engineering, or technical program/product management

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 4+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects

  • 1+ year(s) experience reading and/or writing code (e.g., sample documentation, product demos)

  • Demonstrated experience working with PhD researchers

  • Work or educational experience with Machine Learning, Responsible AI, Sociotechnical Systems, Economics & Computation, or Computational Social Science

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new technologies and concepts, and apply learning to improve outcomes and impact

Technical Program Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
