WSP USA Senior Structural Engineer in New York, New York

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Structural Engineer for our New York, NY office. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Facilities Group and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

The Transportation Facilities Group (TFG) leads and design projects that supports local and regional growth initiatives through small and large transportation projects. Our goal is to team with our agency clients and to develop solutions to the complex challenge of advancing transportation throughout the region. TFG has over 60 engineers and architects throughout the Northeast Region, with major design hubs located in New York City, Boston, St Louis and San Francisco.

The position offers varied projects in the transportation field within the NY Metro Region. The Senior Structural Engineer position will work under the limited supervision of the Supervising Structural Engineer; responsibilities include designs in rail and bus stations, pre-k thru higher education projects, airports, transportation hubs, rail systems, as well a wide array of projects that lead and support the engineering divisions. Clients include NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NJ Transit, NYC SCA, contractors, and local utilities. The scale of work varies from small to mega-projects; the position offers the candidate a wide variety of structural engineering assignments and tremendous exposure to varied disciplines within the New York Office.

Your Impact

  • Leading engineering staff on various task assignments

  • Responsible for the development of structural design, details and drawings, including calculations for new designs, rehabilitation and renovation work

  • Developing drawings in REVIT (BIM), AutoCAD, and MicroStation

  • Strong capabilities and understanding in using structural software such as STAADPro, RAM Steel, SAP, ETABS (or equivalent)

  • Utilizing Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop of structural calculations

  • Leading of field inspection teams for evaluation of structural systems of buildings

  • Coordination with various engineering disciplines as well as with architects in the development of design contract documents

  • Working within a paperless (or limited-use) office environment and remote working when required

  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.

  • Typical projects types include:

  • Transportation segments include rail, bus, subway, airports and marine ports; Facility building types include administration buildings, tolling structures, parking structures, bus, rail and subway stations including associated maintenance facilities, ancillary buildings, ventilation buildings, central heating and refrigeration plant buildings, etc

  • Pre-K through higher education school buildings

  • Resiliency related studies and design

  • Parks and recreation centers

  • Growth Opportunities include:

  • Develop into the Lead Structural Engineer level

  • Assist on the development of the proposals

  • Work on design-build projects including direct interaction with clients

  • Work on high profile type projects including direct interaction with clients

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in transportation related projects.

  • PE Licensed (any state) and capable of obtaining a New York State PE within 1 year

  • Knowledgeable in state and city building codes as well as ASCE7 and material codes

  • Understanding of construction documents

  • Knowledgeable in STAADPro, SAP, RAM Steel. ETABS or similar structural design software

  • Proficiency of AutoCAD and REVIT; knowledgeable in MicroStation is a plus

  • Excellent communication and writing skills and well organized

  • Self-starter, able to work independently and able to multi-task

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within the transportation industry is also a plus

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering

  • Experience related in building design and rehabilitation with construction exposure a plus

  • Knowledge in the development of CSI-format construction specifications

  • NY/NJ/Connecticut area resident preferred

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $81,500 $142,560
