New York Genome Center Scientific System Administrator, Research Computing in New York, New York

The Scientific System Administrator will enhance and support the high-performance computing and data storage environment for the New York Genome Center (‘NYGC’). This individual will be a member of the research computing team that manages multi-petabyte data storage systems and HPC clusters of thousands of cores to support multiple informatics teams that analyze large data sets for genomic research. This role reports to the Senior Director of Research Computing. NYGC IT is dedicated to cross-training, mentorship, continuous improvement and working collaboratively with our scientific partners.

Job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with expanding the size and functionality of NYGC’s compute and storage;

  • Assist internal and external users with utilizing compute and storage facilities;

  • Expand automation and monitoring for systems expansion, management, and environment creation;

  • Install, configure, monitor and debug scientific software tools and HPC workloads;

  • Evaluate processes for automation and optimization, collaborating with scientists to reduce time and effort to produce results;

  • Ensure functionality of compute and storage;

  • Perform data management tasks including migration, transfer to external collaborators, and reporting;

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance as a subject matter expert;

  • Create written documentation for other admins and users;

  • Work closely with scientific staff and partner collaborators to ensure that the system is both usable and useful;

  • Assist installation and maintenance of web applications;

  • Participate in security reviews and hardening efforts;

  • Participate as a member of a team that values cross-training and collaboration.

Required Skills

  • At least 5 years experience in Unix / Linux system administration;

  • At least 2 years experience in at least 2 of the technologies in use;

  • Strong Linux/UNIX scripting skills for data movement and process automation;

  • Experience with automation tools;

  • Experience with virtualized environments and infrastructure;

  • Must be able to work in a dynamic environment;

  • Excellent written communication skills.

Work Flexibility

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule or hybrid remote work arrangement with supervisory approval. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Salary & Benefits

The pay range for this position is $87,500 - 112,000 per year; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university.
