The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Ferrari Lab) in New York, New York

The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Science at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the lab of Dr. Giovanni Ferrari. The individual will be trained in the development of a research program that focuses on translational research and basic science applied to heart valve diseases and bioprosthetic heart valves. Our lab and collaborating partners combine expertise in tissue mechanobiology, cell physiology, small and large animal models, bioengineering, and biochemistry.

Responsibilities include performing experiments in the area of cell physiology, mechanobiology, and biomedical engineering and performing pharmacology and biochemistry assays aimed to assess the pathological remodeling of heart valve diseases

The candidate will be involved in all scientific, experimental and administrative aspects of this research project as well as data analysis, including assisting the PI on project activities as well as editing manuscripts for reports and publications

Additional responsibilities include academic research in accordance with our compliance and excellence in quality care programs, to include active participation in the education of research fellows, residents and medical students, as well as bioengineering graduate students. Responsibilities include participation in the academic and research missions of the University and the Department of Surgery.


We seek highly motivated, meticulous, highly organized individual who enjoys working in a team while concomitantly desiring to pursue their own ideas in a very supportive environment.

The following expertise are required:

  • PhD or MD/PhD. BS and/or MS in biology or biochemistry preferred.
  • Strong Article/Grant writing skills required.
  • Experience in cardiovascular medicine, including:
    • Cell physiology
    • Mechanobiology
    • Clinical science
    • Pharmacology
    • Histology
  • Experience in Bioengineering, include:
    • Mechanical Testing
    • Material science

Candidates should have previous experience in research projects related to heart valves and/or aortic diseases, knowledge in heart valve biology and vascular surgery
