Breaking Ground operates nearly 4,000 units of housing across New York City, along with housing in upstate New York and Connecticut. Supportive housing - affordable housing paired with services designed to help people maintain their homes for the long-term - is widely recognized as a proven and cost-effective solution to chronic homelessness.

But we didn't stop at providing housing. Breaking Ground's programs and services help people experiencing street homelessness - especially those who have been on the streets the longest - to come indoors. Through our Street to Home outreach program and transitional housing resources, we help people get, and stay, on the path to a permanent home.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Communications the Manager, Communications is part of the External Affairs team responsible for prompting and educating constituents and stakeholders about the organization’s mission. The Manager partners with donors, government officials, non-profits, and academics to strengthen support for and to create educational information about the organization’s work in homeless outreach, transitional housing, and permanent housing. The Manager provides support to internal partners with developing messaging, presentations, events, and applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President, Communications and the Vice President all aspects of the organization’s annual communications strategy and tactics (e.g., events), and implement strategies with public relations firms and other external partners to realize this strategy

  • Serve as the editorial manager and often writer for communications, including the Breaking Ground website, eNewsletter/eBlasts, Annual Report, agency brochures, and all original collateral materials used within informational packets

  • Manage story discovery with colleagues in Programs and Property Management to uncover interesting narratives and profiles appropriate for use in owned and earned media

  • Work with the Assistant Vice President to manage and report on the organization’s social media channels, including gathering, creating, and posting photography, graphics, and copy

  • Provide support as needed for messaging at the organization’s special events

  • Assist with public relations and work with key organizational partners, including providing support with award applications

  • Performs other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required

  • Minimum 2 years of experience implementing measurably effective communications strategies to advance understanding and awareness of a group's purpose, products and impact through both traditional and new media platforms

  • Demonstrated experience writing a variety of concise communication products for multiple purposes and audiences

  • Basic photography and graphic design skills preferred

  • Experience in web content management systems and digital and print graphic design strongly preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal skills; self-starter with high energy and demonstrated collaborative experience; strategic and creative thinker; good knowledge of graphic design; ability to multi-task; strong interpersonal skills and a tactful manner

  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat; Adobe Creative Suite; Microsoft Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams required
