Organization Overview

We study molecular mechanisms required for the stable propagation of our genomes with the goal of developing new therapies to treat cancer. Errors in cell division have been linked to diseases and developmental defects in humans. We combine the discovery and use of chemical probes,synthetic chemistry,biochemistry,biophysics,and quantitative cell biology to answer long-standing questions relating to cell division. Studying cell division also provides us an opportunity to develop new approaches for the analysis of other complex cellular mechanisms.

Overview

The Laboratory Manager's duties will be divided across lab management / administrative and technical /scientific duties. Administrative duties will primarily involve organizing scientific meetings of lab members or guests, general product ordering and lab organization (65% time). Scientific research duties will initially center around molecular biology (35% time). The scientific focus will evolve as the project does.

Responsibilities

Lab management/administrative duties:

  • Place lab orders; Deal with issues involving receipt or non-receipt of items and payment

  • Establish accounts and monitor standing orders and equipment service contracts

  • Oversee charges from Resource Centers and other internal organizations (e.g. lab safety)

  • Responsible for organizing the following general lab upkeep, including:

  • Keep stock of standard consumables and reorder as needed

  • Maintain lab inventories of cell lines, antibody, biochemicals

  • Check -80 freezer for temperature and ice build-up. Organize and assign space to lab members

  • Check -20 freezer and refrigerators for organization and maintenance. Organize and assign space to lab members

  • Oversee training of users and maintenance of key lab equipment (e.g. centrifuges, FPLC) and coordinate repairs

  • Check LN2 storage

  • Aid research projects (as described above)

  • Act as Lab Safety Officer: looking for safety violations (eyewash blocked, unlabeled waste, ethanol in cold room); organizing annual lab safety training updates for all lab members

  • Schedule Lab Meetings and sending reminders, order food, set up AV (including Zoom)

  • Assist in organizing meetings for visitors (3-4 times each year)

  • Welcome new lab members and introduce them to equipment/inventories/ordering and other established lab procedures.

  • Assist with archiving data annually, when members leave or following publications.

  • Assist in updating lab website and Twitter account

  • Supervise part-time lab helper and fill-in when lab helper is away

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested

  • Assist with reimbursements associated with travel/meetings/lab events

  • Assist with shipping lab reagents requested by others

Scientific research duties

  • Assist with maintaining plasmid stocks, cell lines, and molecular biology projects

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; educational emphasis in Biology (including molecular biology and biochemistry) strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years lab experience

  • Skills required include standard molecular / cell biological bench skills (solution preparation, plasmid purification, restriction digests, cell and tissue culture, electrophoretic analyses)

  • Molecular cloning experience is essential

  • Must be detail oriented, highly organized, and computer literate

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
