Job Description:

Electronic trading: using computer software and advanced mathematics to make money by trading bonds.

This job focuses on building algorithms to trade municipal bonds. The challenge? Build a stable system that processes GBs of real-time data to arrive at the fair price for 0.5 million different bonds. Imagine it like this… you operate an art gallery and you’re not sure what any painting is worth. Some artists sell for thousands and others for just hundreds. If you’ve just sold a painting, how do translate that sale price into a better value for other paintings from the same artist, from similar artists, and then to the art market as a whole?

Applicant Description:

The job involves building statistical models for bond trading, which requires knowledge of probability, statistics, and machine learning techniques. The candidate should be familiar with a few techniques such as generalized linear models, SVM, hidden Markov models, random forests and/or expectation maximization.

Candidates should be good with either Java and/or Python, since how else are we going to make the algorithms work?

Desired Skills

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Operations Research
  • Working knowledge of basic probability
  • Experience with the statistical modeling of data
  • Several years of programming experience: Java, Python and C
  • Good sense of humor

    • Beneficial Skills*
  • Experience in a Muni electronic trading or research role

Knowledge of Munis or Corporates and Market Microstructure

Expected base pay rates for the role will be $150,000 to $200,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.

Morgan Stanley's goal is to build and maintain a workforce that is diverse in experience and background but uniform in reflecting our standards of integrity and excellence. Consequently, our recruiting efforts reflect our desire to attract and retain the best and brightest from all talent pools. We want to be the first choice for prospective employees. It is the policy of the Firm to ensure equal employment opportunity without discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, age, sex, sex stereotype, gender, gender identity or expression, transgender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, disability, marital and civil partnership/union status, pregnancy, veteran or military service status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.
