The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Associate Research Scientist in New York, New York

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health invites applications from PhD or other doctoral-level degree holders for an Associate Research Scientist position in tobacco control research.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Associate Research Scientist will play an integral role on a NIH-funded project examining the tobacco retail environment in US cities and its impact on tobacco use disparities. Primary responsibilities include collecting, analyzing and interpreting data on the tobacco retail environment (e.g., retailer density, marketing), population survey data, and qualitative data (e.g., interviews with key stakeholders). The Associate Research Scientist will also lead and contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations related to study findings. The Associate Research Scientist will assist in supervising junior research staff and students as opportunities arise. A major component of this position will be the development of new project ideas and NIH funding applications, such as K awards.

There will also be opportunities to develop new research collaborations within the department and contribute to some of the department's educational activities, such as student advising and course lectures.

Individuals from groups historically underrepresented in health-related research are strongly encouraged to apply.

Candidates should hold a doctoral-level degree in public health, social and behavioral health sciences, epidemiology, or a related field, and should have completed at least one year of postdoctoral training, ideally in tobacco-related research. Ideal candidates will have strong mixed-methods research skills, documented by a record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and have a history of successful research funding (e.g., pilot projects, dissertation funding). Given the focus of the project, a demonstrated commitment to addressing health inequities is a highly preferred qualification.
