The main goal of the work will be implementation, testing and further development of new machine-learning parameterizations for subgrid atmospheric processes (convection and turbulence) and observations-based nudging tendencies in the Community Earth System Model (CESM). Testing will be done in models of increasing complexity from single column model to prescribed sea surface temperature to fully coupled model. The successful applicant will work as part of the MLInES atmospheric science team with Dr. Judith Berner at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Prof. Paul O'Gorman (MIT), and Pierre Gentine (Columbia University). The successful applicant is also expected to actively collaborate with other MLInES team members, with scientists and engineers at NCAR, and with the Institute of Computing for Climate Science (ICCS).
