The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Associate Research Scientist (Yan Lab) in New York, New York

The Department of Surgery Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for an Associate Research Scientist in the Divison of Surgical Sciences. The focus of the research projects will be cellular and molecular mechanism underlying neurodegeneration and mitochondrial dysfunction relevant to basic and translational study.

Responsibilities of the individual will include:

1) Performing laboratory research in the area of neurodegeneration and mitochondrial function relevant to amyloid pathology and mitochondrial degeneration.

2) Evaluating the effect of small molecule compounds on amyloid pathology and mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, synaptic pathology.

3) Functionally characterize candidate genes that influence mitochondrial and synaptic function, amyloid pathology in transgenic animal models.

4) Initiates and conducts individual and interdisciplinary research in neuronal function.

5) Analyze and summarize research data sets utilizing statistical methods.

6) Present research results and prepare manuscripts for peer review and publication in professional journals. Participate to the development of an extramurally funded research program by assisting PIs with NIH grants by developing and generating data and figures

7) Active participation in the academic and research missions of the University and the Department of Surgery.

8) Training and development of junior lab members

PhD, MD or MD/PhD

Minimum Qualifications:

Research experience using mice

Preferred Qualifications:

- PhD in neurobiology, neuroscience or a related field.

- Experience performing research in synaptic biology, cell biology techniques,

neuronal culture, protein evaluation (immunoblotting), and/or microscopy.

- Articles published in peer reviewed journals as first or co-author in the areas of neuroscience, amyloid and synaptic biology,

- Experience writing scientific papers and assisting with grant application
