Position Summary
The Advanced Spine Coder in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery will be responsible for advanced coding for spine related services, using CPT and ICD-10 coding. Reporting to the Sr. Finance and Surgical Coding Manager, the Advanced Spine Coder will collaborate with the team of coders to process spine surgical coding.
Responsibilities
Job Duties:
- Assist surgeons and clinical teams in assigning appropriate codes based on diagnosis and planned surgical procedures
- Review surgeon's office reports to ensure medical necessity is properly documented and to ensure all diagnosis codes and CPT codes are listed appropriately
- Provide feedback to physicians on coding documentation
- Review surgeon's operative reports daily to ensure all diagnosis codes and CPT codes are billed correctly; informs authorization and billing department if codes need to be reconciled between procedures planned versus performed
- Review and follow up on denials related to coding and charge entry processes; if a claim is denied due to incorrect coding, conducts medical records research and corresponds with insurance companies and clinicians to resolve issue
- Manage appeals with insurance companies for surgical claim reimbursement when appropriate
- Discuss out-of-network responsibilities with patients and collect deposits
- Serve as liaison between clinicians, billing consultants, patient financial counselor and insurance carriers to discuss coding issues
- Conform to all applicable HIPAA, billing compliance and safety guidelines
- Attend all regular departmental meetings
- Work as part of the orthopedic billing team and offers cross-coverage to other staff members
- Any additional related duties as assigned
General skills:
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and directly with surgeons, nurses, and other support staff as well as patients and payers including Medicare, Medicaid and private.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment
- Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines
- Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in spine coding (Orthopedics or Neurosurgery)
