POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Medicine at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY School of Medicine also offers a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies (PA). Our mission is to provide access to medical education to talented individuals from social, ethnic and racial backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities with a special emphasis on primary care and reducing health disparities. As a growing school, our philanthropic areas of growth will be in student scholarships and support to our educational and research missions.

The Academic Advisor Lead will report directly to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the CUNY School of Medicine. Under direction, with latitude for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, this position will perform administrative work following relevant departmental, College and University procedures:

  • Provides individualized academic counseling to a diverse student population and contributes to the successful operations of the Office of Student Affairs.

  • Comprehensive advisement to gauge students’ academic interests and assists them in choosing appropriate educational plans and goals in supporting their unique needs and circumstances.

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action such as developing academic plans, remediation plans for “at risk” students and performs graduation audits.

  • Counsels students with personal, family, and academic problems and provide support during stressful transitions.

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to students in supporting their unique needs and circumstances.

  • Works with the Office of Medical Education and Course Directors to strategize academic support policies and procedures.

  • Provides referrals, as needed, to other support services within the institution such as Counseling and Wellness Office, Learning Resource Center (LRC), Office of AccessAbility, etc.

  • Assists the Associate Dean with academic support programs including advising programs, seminars, orientations and ceremonious events.

  • Plans, develops, and presents special programs such as workshops, seminars, and general information sessions.

  • Develops communications and materials for students regarding support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines.

  • Works with representatives of other student service units, such as the Registrar, to assure a continuously high level of student service.

  • Performs graduation checks and inform students about graduation requirements.

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and at least 6 years relevant experience in student advising or equivalent in combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, or closely related field preferred.

  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits

  • Plans, develops, and presents special programs such as workshops, seminars, and general information sessions

  • Develops communications and materials for students regarding support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines

  • Hires, develops, and supervises a team of academic advisors; provides general training and development to all advising staff

  • Works with representatives of other student service units, such as the Registrar, to assure a continuously high level of student service

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$67,784 - $76,395

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
