Senior, Technical Accounting

Deloitte Services LP includes internal support areas such as Controllership, Sales Excellence, Marketing and Communications, Human Resources/Talent, Information Technology, Facilities Management, and Financial Support Services.

Position Summary

The Senior will join the Controllership - Technical Accounting team to conduct research, analyze and provide technical accounting guidance on complex business transactions such as acquisitions, divestitures, revenue recognition, leases, financial instruments, consolidation, and impairments. The Senior will collaborate with the US Firms' Controller, Business Controllers, Accounting Policy, Financial Planning and Analysis, Corporate Development, Treasury, Global Finance Services (GFS), and other teams within the Accounting and Compliance organization as part of providing technical accounting guidance and strategic support for complex non-routine transactions.

The ideal candidate for this position should have strong knowledge of technical accounting and financial reporting, as well as experience with technical research. Superior attention to details, critical thinking, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical qualifications for this role. It is expected the candidate will hold themselves and others accountable for ensuring results are achieved on time, take action beyond formal job responsibility and set high expectations for themselves.

About the Team

Controllership function within its Finance & Administration organization provides stewardship over the US Firms' assets by monitoring business transactions and setting accounting policy that results in accurate and reliable financial statements. The Controllership - Technical Accounting team is a dynamic, highly-collaborative group that upholds accounting standards and ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). We advise on accounting issues and oversee the recording of complex non-routine business transactions that results in accurate financial information that is relied upon for critical business decisions.

What you'll do

  • Critically review contracts, research and interpret accounting standards, and provide technical accounting guidance on complex transactions such as acquisitions, divestitures, revenue recognition, leases, financial instruments, consolidation and impairments.

  • Assist with communication of the accounting impact to business stakeholders and Finance Business Partners so they understand the impact on budgets and forecasts.

  • Work with business and finance stakeholders to understand acquisition and divestiture transactions and provide technical accounting insights during pre-transaction close.

  • Perform business combination accounting, allocation of purchase price analysis, and valuation analysis of identifiable intangible assets, including working with and checking the work performed by valuation specialists, to ensure amounts are recorded and presented in accordance with US GAAP and firm policies.

  • Prepare journal entries with sufficient supporting documentation to substantiate the entries and ensure purchase price allocation is appropriately allocated for M&A transactions and gain/loss calculation is appropriate for any divestitures.

  • Prepare high quality technical accounting memos on all key technical accounting matters.

  • Stay up-to-date on changes to accounting standards and regulatory requirements and assist with the development of accounting policies and procedures, as needed.

  • Support the implementation and execution of key controls and processes and update key control narratives, as needed.

  • Provide support to other US Firms' Controllership team members on special projects related to aspects of technical accounting, as needed.

  • Build collaborative and positive working relationships with stakeholders, by providing high quality deliverables and timely communications with a focus on collaboration and teamwork.

  • Exercise professional skepticism, judgement, and adhere to the code of ethics.

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field

  • Certification as CPA (or certification in process) with experience interpreting and assessing US GAAP accounting standards

  • 3+ years of relevant technical accounting experience, preferably in a professional services firm

  • Up-to-date technical knowledge of US GAAP accounting standards

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Understanding and proficiency of SAP and other financial applications

  • Solid written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated accomplishments in the following areas:

  • Ability to understand and support application of applicable areas of accounting policy

  • Ability to perform research into, and a desire to expand your technical accounting expertise

  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a virtual environment

  • Ability to think creatively, problem solve and work independently

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $66200 to $121800.
