LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking highly skilled applicants for the position of Operating Engineer Master. Must possess three years of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of large commercial or industrial type stationary engines or mechanical equipment such as air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, pumping, generating, chillers, or closely related systems.

Starting rate is $21.05 per hour, rate may be adjusted depending on experience and qualifications of the applicant. There is also an additional $1 Longevity Pay, $2 Shift Differential Pay and $3 Weekend Pay for hours worked only.

Preference will be given to applicants who possess a 1st class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate for steam boilers and at minimum a 2nd class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate for air conditioning.

Must be available for scheduled shift work after regular working hours and during holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Operates, monitors, and controls system wide output

  • Operates auxiliaries including firing up steam boilers, starting and stopping chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC equipment

  • Performs chemical & softener tests

  • Reads gauges to check water levels, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliar, pumps

  • Maintains, inspects, and repairs mechanical equipment and components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies

  • Checks all equipment for proper fluid levels and operation before using

  • Reports all unsafe situations immediately to supervisor or higher authority as needed to correct the condition as quickly as possible

  • Assists other trades as needed

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of large commercial or industrial type stationary engines or mechanical equipment such as air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, pumping, generating, chillers, or closely related systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in commercial air conditioning, refrigeration or diesel mechanics will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:

Incidental duties in operating or maintaining one's own heating, air conditioning or related equipment will not be considered as qualifying experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

For those positions in which incumbents will be working with and handling refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).
