New employees will begin at 90% of the starting rate for the first six months. The pay rate increases incrementally according to the union contract. Wages for new employees will be on a tiered scale based on the candidates skills and experience as approved by management staff at the time of hire. (Salary may change pending CBA finalization)

The Regional Transit Authority gets people moving around New Orleans. Our transit services bring hard-working commuters to their jobs, students to their schools, and fun seekers to entertainment, shopping areas, and restaurants. We provide mobility to residents of the city as well as tourists, taking them to and from their hotels to historical neighborhoods and countless attractions. RTAs system includes 5 streetcar lines, 30 bus routes, 2 ferry routes, and paratransit services. Our passengers take more than 19 million rides every year.
REPORTS TO Maintenance Supervisor, Lead Technician
TITLES OF POSITIONS REPORTING DIRECTLY TO THIS JOB None
JOB SUMMARY This position involves labor-intensive work that requires the employee to perform corrective repairs and preventive maintenance inspections on transit buses. The employee must be able to function well without close supervision, use current test equipment to diagnose problems, read and comprehend maintenance manuals and electrical diagrams, and fully adhere to specific instructions.

- Diagnoses problems related to all phases of transit bus systems.
- Performs wheel alignments and repairs including removal or replacement of parts on air brake systems, air conditioners, electronic fuel injectors, electronic transmissions, ABS and hydraulic brakes, diesel powerplants and subcomponents, suspensions, and cooling systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance procedures and maintains records or logs for Company vehicles.
- Diagnose problems related to propulsion, suspension, braking, and steering.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of RTA are carried out.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Performs other job-related duties which are in keeping with the goals and objectives of RTA
Qualifications
EDUCATION
- High school diploma, G.E.D., or vocational training in automotive mechanics.
- A.S.E. Master Technician certification is desirable. However, any A.S.E. certification is preferred.
EXPERIENCE Must have a minimum of three (3) years of recent, verifiable experience as a mechanic
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS
- Must possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A-P
Must submit to a criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to work outdoors and indoors under varying weather conditions. The job requires stooping, bending, climbing, kneeling, and walking throughout the shift, and at times the handling of parts ranging from 10 to 50 pounds or more.

- Be capable of standing or walking for a full work shift.
- Ability to lift and carry at least 60 lbs.

- Must be able to work while in the following positions or conditions: sitting, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, crouching, lying down prone or supine, at shoulder level or above, or any combination listed above.
- Must be able to work at heights on platforms and man-lifts. Must be able to work in pits and under lifted heavy equipment.
- Must be able to work in all required Personal Protective Equipment and Safety gear.
- Must be able to work in the assigned uniform approved by the Company

- Must be able to read and comprehend maintenance manuals and electrical diagrams.
- Must be able to use current test equipment including but not limited to digital multimeters, starting/charging systems testers, Diagnostic scanners, and system testing equipment.
- Must be able to understand English and read and write legibly for required reports.
- Read, write, speak, and understand English
