Job Overview:

Provides continuous monitoring of adult and pediatric cardiac rhythms of patients with telemetry orders.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • American Heart Association CPR required

  • Certification following satisfactory passing grade in the RWJUH Monitor Technician and EKG course

Preferred:

  • Previous telemetry experience

Essential Functions:

  • Admitting and Discharging patients

  • Attends the central monitoring station on a constant basis.

  • Attaches lead and activates telemetry transmitter, then enters patient's information in the central monitoring station and activates alarms.

  • Labels telemetry record form and records and stores a baseline rhythm strip.

  • Saves a sample rhythm for each patient and prints the sample on the laser printer at beginning of each shift.

  • Attaching and removing telemetry transmitter from patients

  • Responsible for attaching and removing telemetry transmitter from patient i.e.. RN and PCT will assist when census is high

  • Obtain patients name from secretary

  • Always maintain patients confidentiality and privacy

  • Introduces self to patient and family and wear appropriate RWJ ID.

  • Always check with RN prior to removing transmitter

  • Daily job responsibilities

  • Interprets and initials each patients cardiac rhythm sample with PR, QRS, and QT intervals.

  • Records interpretation on the telemetry record and files the sample behind the telemetry record in the binder.

  • Reviews alarm histories three times per shift.

  • Prints pertinent alarm samples and files in record.

  • Deletes alarm histories after printing.

  • On the night shift, retrieves samples acquired during the previous 24 hours for the patient's chart under the "Cardiology" section.

  • Retains the telemetry record in the binder for additional documentation.

  • Prints all remaining samples when telemetry discontinued.

  • Discharges patient from the central station.

  • Communication

  • Maintains communication with the RN of assigned unit and remote nursing units.

  • Notes any changes in patient rhythms and reports them immediately to the primary nurse and records these changes for the nurse and physician to review.

  • Telemetry transmitter maintenance

  • Manages telemetry equipment and monitor supplies.

  • Orders batteries, paper and electrodes as needed.

  • Removes batteries from the transmitter, cleans the transmitter and lead sets with germicidal wipes and stores the transmitter and leads in appropriate storage drawer.
