Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an experience, service-oriented Lab Facilities Specialist for the School of Engineering. They will oversee the day-to-day laboratory operations at Undergraduate Education. This position will work in a multidisciplinary environment and play a pivotal role in supporting the technical needs of our faculty and students across all engineering disciplines. The candidate must be capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment and work flexible hours including some evening hours. Due to its hands-on nature, this position requires physical presence and cannot be done remotely.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Collaborates closely with the stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, teaching and learning assistants) to support innovative, project-based, hands-on engineering education; assist with operation and execution of laboratory demonstrations and experiments for classes, labs, and research projects; help with prototyping, fabrication, and verification of designs.
  • Assists in the development, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory facilities and field equipment including but not limited to 3D printers, NC machines, laser cutters, machine tools, computers, embedded systems design kits, measurement instruments, etc.; manage the usage of the lab equipment; maintain lab inventory and supplies to ensure that the right resources are in the right place at the right time.
  • Provides resources and guidance to stakeholders on the use of lab facilities and equipment; prepare short demos of the lab and student projects for visitors and marketing and recruitment events.
  • Maintains workplace safety in accordance with applicable University policies and other regulatory agencies; develop and update safety training manuals and procedures and provide trainings to the stakeholders.
  • Manages student workers supporting the job duties including interviewing, hiring, and supervision of the student workers.
  • Engages in continuous professional development and skill enhancement through relevant trainings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Undergraduate Education.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Require a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience in mechanical and electrical/electronic design that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of research principles and practices. *
  • Also requires a minimum of two years of relevant professional research experience in a STEM area in an academic or industrial setting.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Experience with programming microcontrollers (such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi) and with a variety of programming languages (such as Python, C, C++ , MATLAB); experience with use of software for design and analysis such as LabVIEW, PSpice, Cura, AutoCAD/SolidWorks, Simulink
  • Experience and professional knowledge with rapid prototyping equipment, including, 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and fabrication tools such as drill press, lathe, saw, milling machine, etc.
  • Experience with lab safety procedures.
  • Capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer a master's degree or a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Five years of relevant experience in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Prior working experience as a lab specialist supporting hand-on engineering design courses.
Equipment Utilized
