Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Housing Maintenance Mechanic for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The position is primarily responsible for the performance of such mechanical maintenance duties as the examination, dismantling, repair, reassembly and maintenance of various types of mechanical/electrical equipment, including refrigeration units, heating systems, air handling machinery, air conditioners, pumps, plumbing and steamfitting equipment, boilers, filters, etc.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Inspects, repairs, and/or replaces used and defective parts; adjusts, lubricates and cleans functional parts.
  • May be required to perform general painting, carpentry, locksmithing, masonry and electrical duties.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair duties.
  • Cleans shop and work areas.
  • Detects faulty operation of equipment.
  • Reports questionable conditions to supervisor.
  • Conducts inventory of equipment, materials and supplies.
  • May give instruction to craft trainees.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent plus three (3) years of experience performing mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair work on industrial type motors and pumps.
  • Successful completion of an approved training program or of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade may be substituted for the above experience
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license with two years driving experience is necessary.
  • Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be competent in performing complex and varied mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair work on industrial-type motors and pumps (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, etc.)
