Craven County Government Public Health Nurse II - Maternity (10375) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

This position will provide direct patient care toCraven County Health Department Maternity clients.

Essential Functions

Interview patient for family/patient medical history patients contraceptive history, menstrual history, pregnancy history and sexual history. Instruct patient in use of prenatal vitamins and iron supplement, if prescribed. Obtain consent forms for release of other facilities medical records and HIV testing. Explain Craven County Health Department contract and obtain signature. Educate patient on clinic, anatomy, medication, signs of labor, preterm labor and danger signs. Determine estimated date of confinement by last menstrual period date, sign appropriate lab orders, and collect specimens, wet smear, chlamydia, and Pap smear. Assess Fetal Heart Tones with Doppler. Assess fundal height, review labs for abnormalities.

For patients seen in Regular Maternity Clinic: Prepare patient for physical exams by physician extender, educate patient with ongoing discussion of contraceptive options, preterm labor, s/s of labor, etc. Update screening questions, address any problems, discuss with Physician or Physician Extenders. Review physician extenders instruction with patient. Assist with referrals. Chart labs and record ultrasounds. Perform NST as needed.

For patients seen in High-Risk Clinic: Prepare patient for physical exams by physician extender, educate patient with ongoing discussion of contraceptive options, preterm labor, s/s of labor, etc. Update screening questions, address any problems, discuss with Physician or Physician Extenders. Review physician extenders instruction with patient. Assist with referrals. Chart labs and record ultrasounds. Perform NSTs as needed.

May be required to serve during times of disaster. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.

A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing.
