General Definition of Work

SEASONAL POSITION UP TO 15 HOURS PER WEEK; DURATION OF POSITION TO BE DETERMINED.

Performs intermediate skilled clerical and technical work ensuring the proper custody and disposition of evidence and property; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Maintaining custody and disposing of evidence and property; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

  • Processes incoming evidence; verifies paperwork; assigns property control number; assigns location for storage; logs evidence in and out for court; retains chain of custody.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Processes court destruction orders.
  • Corresponds with other law enforcement or public service jurisdictions; maintains records.
  • Conducts research for dispositions; sends letters to owners for return; sends notice to officer when time limit has expired; works with non-profit groups.
  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies, places order for the day-to-day function of the department.
  • Issues uniforms; maintains inventory of on-hand uniforms; maintains paperwork on items issued and returned.
  • Provides support for special events; provides preparedness for hurricanes.
  • Maintains seized and impounded vehicles; conducts inventory and prepares monthly report.
  • Enters a variety of information into the computer; processes incoming and outgoing paperwork; maintains logbooks.
  • Prepares a variety of reports. Provides training on property and evidence related issues.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of record keeping methods and techniques;
  • thorough knowledge of rules and regulations governing the custody and safekeeping of evidence and property;
  • ability to establish and follow routine schedules;
  • ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed and operate standard office and data entry equipment;
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, associates, and the general public.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, natural/forensic science or related field and experience in police evidence and records preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
