Craven County Government Medical Lab Technician II (10333) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose The primary purpose of this position is to report timely, accurate and reliable test results using independent judgment in hematology, microbiology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, virology, phlebotomy, bacteriological food testing and other miscellaneous tests. Essential Functions

  • Responsible for producing and reporting accurate, reliable and timely test results on clinical specimens in waived, moderate or high complexity tests as defined by CLIA. Areas include hematology, bacteriology, urinalysis, chemistry, serology, food testing and other miscellaneous tests.
  • Must be able to perform all tests according to CLIA, OSHA and/or state mandates. Review test results.
  • Use independent judgement to recognize abnormal and/or critical test values and make decisions as to if repeat or confirmatory testing is warranted.
  • Perform and record preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on equipment as necessary.
  • Monitor and record temperature of storage equipment as required.
  • Review and complete pending logs and quality control records.
  • Assist with maintaining monthly and/or quarterly checklists for the lab area.
  • Accurately and reliably prepare reagents needed for testing.
  • Monitor inventory supplies and reagents in the Microbiology section, and request needed supplies in a timely manner.
  • Answer questions from other staff, providers, students, etc. regarding lab policies and procedures.
  • Assist with clinical/testing procedures training for new lab staff and other clinical staff.
  • Perform blood drawing on adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients that come to the lab for testing.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course, and one year of medical laboratory experience; or
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of medical laboratory experience;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in high complexity testing (microbiology and hematology) preferred. ASCP, CLS, HEW, or an equivalent certification or eligibility is required.
