Craven County Government Deputy Sheriff - Civil (10115) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

Performs specialized law enforcement work in the processing and serving of civil documents for the Sheriffs Office which may include child support (IV-D) papers and civil/criminal processes issued by the court. An employee in this class performs a variety of law enforcement duties involving receiving and serving civil process papers such as summons, thirty-day commitments, show cause orders and order for arrest. enforcement. Tact and firmness are required in frequent public contact. Independent judgment and initiative must be exercised when carrying out details of standard assignments. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Sheriffs Office and is supplemented by frequent specific instructions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Captain-Civil Process and/or Lieutenant -Civil Process and is evaluated through periodic conferences and in terms of the effectiveness with which civil papers are served.

Essential Functions

Serves legal papers including civil and criminal processes, summons, warrants, subpoenas, special proceedings, orders to appear and show cause, restraining orders, child custody orders, orders of attachment, commitment papers, and special court orders as they pertain to child support enforcement. Employee uses directories and other means to locate designated parties; explains briefly the meaning of papers and makes arrests when necessary.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of experience and training. One year experience and Basic Law Enforcement Certification. Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission. Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.

Additional Information

Appears in court as witness to give testimony. Prepares reports of activities. Serves in other capacities of the Sheriffs Office on an as needed basis, to include patrol, investigations, narcotics, and administrative divisions. Performs related work as required.

Physical Requirements Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
