Overview

The Manager of Nursing Professional Development is responsible for the orientation, education and continuing education needs of nursing team members. Must demonstrate excellence in operational management while improving service excellence, clinical quality, educational training and educational outcomes. Promotes team member professional development, the delivery of quality patient outcomes and competent nursing care by providing orientation, continuing education and in service activities for professional, licensed, ancillary, nursing and hospital personnel. Educators are responsible for coordinating education programs, design and processes, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Provides consultation and resources services, coordinates aspects of professional development services and projects for designated areas and promotes activities for employee's professional development.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager of Nursing Professional Development at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Manages the recruitment, development and supervision of team members. Creates and sustains an environment that fosters team member engagement. Established clear objectives tied to department and/or organizational strategic goals. Coaches, counsels and evaluates performance of direct reports.

  • Fosters effective working relationships among team members through daily huddles, team member meetings and individual communication and counseling while holding all accountable for organizational commitments.

  • Involved in the development and/or management of budget for assigned areas. Regularly monitors relevant key financial indicators and performance metrics, modifying business activities where needed in response to changing financial situations.

  • Tracks, analyzes and reports on relevant data and metrics as needed and/or requested. Develops, recommends and/or implements actions or process improvements as appropriate. Relates and measures program effectiveness to Patient Satisfaction scores and feedback. Assesses needs and course correction both on individual team member and departmental/systemic levels.

  • In alignment with clinical corporate initiatives, creates and oversees nursing training programs and activities aimed at improving patient care through efficient, high-reliability practices. Programs must provide an array of offerings to address learning and development opportunity from new-hire to master as well as the flexibility to incorporate changing and emerging healthcare needs.

  • Ensures program design meet TJC requirements and promotes continued Magnet status. Partners with the appropriate hospital and network resources to research sentinel events, designing courses to correct and prevent them.

  • Represents Nursing Education in a manner that models integrity and mentorship. Articulates the role to nursing team members, team leaders, physicians and the community. Promotes, teaches and manages oneself to foster credibility of the department and its practices. Acts as a resource to teach, sponsor and stimulate HMH's defined behaviors of nursing, leadership and growth.

  • Fosters open, direct and constructive communication across all levels, eliminates obstacles, and meets goals. Organizes and analyzes metrics/data to create a source that is meaningful and useful.

  • Provides and participates in orientation processes for all levels of nursing personnel.

  • Provides educational activities based upon assessed needs of the employees, the target audience and in keeping with medical center's strategic plan, mission, vision, values, priorities and goals, which promote team member competency and safe patient care practices, meets job performance, accreditation regulatory and professional practice standards

  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of overall educational activities. Utilizes data to implement needed improvements and changes on going and annually to reflect currency of practice trends. Prepares and implements evaluation tools; completes summaries; utilizes feedback and data to improve programs. Participates in performance improvement activities 12. Acts as a resource person, mentor, consultant and role model. Participates in shared governance and other committees/teams policies and procedures development. Provides consultation services that facilitates individual, or group, competencies, career development, Magnet Forces and promotes standards of practice. Acts as liaison for nursing school affiliates.

  • Prepares, maintains, and completes accurate documentation of reports, in service forms, educational records, programs and other educational files. Maintains required documentation and records-keeping systems in compliance with departmental, organizational and external accrediting and regulatory agencies requirements. Implements NJSNA/ANCC criteria in the role of the nurse planner in preparing education initiatives.

  • Promotes current professional nursing standards and best practices. Makes referrals/recommendations for problem solving to meet professional best practices, regulatory or accrediting standards. Utilizes current nursing literature, research, evidence-based practices in development of educational activities and processes.

  • Plans and accomplishes annual goals and projects in accordance with the departmental and organizational priorities. Coordinates educational activities for clinical areas assigned and projects.

  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

  • Current and valid New Jersey Nursing license is required

  • Master's Degree in Nursing

  • Minimum of 3 years of Education Experience in professional development or academic development

  • BLS required

  • Specialty certification in Nursing (Med-Surg, Geriatric, Critical Care Emergency Nursing) required

  • Management experience preferred

  • Magnet experience preferred

  • Certification in Professional Development preferred
