Job Description

Support the academic mission of the Vanderbilt Law School and Vanderbilt University by assisting all library patrons at the service desk; aiding with delivery of physical materials and scanning of materials to law faculty and students and to patrons across the Vanderbilt Library System; and assisting with the library’s inventory and shelf-reading. The library assistant for public services position operates a Monday – Friday schedule starting at 7:30 a.m., with possible changes as needed during semester breaks or other staff vacations. This position reports to the Access Services Librarian.

The Alyne Queener Massey Law Library offers a broad range of expertise, resources and services that enable the Law School to carry out its program of legal education, and support scholarship and research. The Access Services Department within the Alyne Queener Massey Law Library is responsible for

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform essential functions at the Service Desk, including but not limited to: opening/closing the library; charging/discharging library materials; general catalog lookup; troubleshooting copiers and printers; answering directional questions; and triaging reference questions to law librarians.

  • Supporting faculty and student research needs by assisting with the retrieval and document delivery of physical materials and scanning of materials within the law library and other campus libraries; assisting with pulling and scanning of materials from library shelves for loans related to resource sharing and course reserves; and routing materials to other campus libraries.

  • Other duties needed or assigned, including but not limited to: participating in special projects, including the library’s inventory and shelf-reading, participating in training that will enhance skills

Qualifications

  • Strong customer service skills are required.

  • The ability to work well with others and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, is required.

  • Requires lifting and carrying volumes and packages, walking to other campus libraries, and pushing carts loaded with books.

  • A Bachelor's Degree of Arts or a Bachelor's Degree of Science is preferred.

  • Two years of library experience preferred.

  • Proficiency with library catalog, library circulation systems, and ILLiad preferred.

  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills helpful.

  • Experience working with legal materials desirable.
